AAJC Launches Reuniting Families Campaign

WASHINGTON—Today the Asian American Justice Center (AAJC), member of the Asian American Center for Advancing Justice, launched a campaign to highlight how critical the family-based immigration system is.

Approximately 60 percent of Asian Americans are foreign born—the highest percentage of any racial group. And in 2012 more than one-third of family visas issued went to Asian countries, illustrating how integral a robust family-based immigration system is to the community.

AAJC’s campaign will educate the public and lawmakers alike about the hardships our community—and other immigrant communities—endure because the system is outdated, arbitrary and broken.

Nearly 4.3 million people are waiting around the world to be reunited with loved ones who immigrated to the U.S.; approximately 1.8 million of those trapped in the backlog are in Asia.

Congress must finally pass meaningful immigration reform and that overhaul must also protect and revamp the family-based system so that spouses, parents and children don’t have to wait sometimes decades to live together in the U.S.
