Nothing beats the taste of a fresh crab, which is why you need to keep them alive before you cook them. The most popular types of crabs are blue crabs, dungeness crabs, snow crabs and king crabs. You can find much of these live and fresh crabs at your nearest neighborhood Asian Supermarket. All of these breeds of crab can be kept in the refrigerator overnight if you do not want to eat them on the same day. The only difficult part about storing fresh crab is making room in your refrigerator.

Things You’ll Need

Live crabs
Large bowl
Paper towels

Instructions

1.) Purchase live crabs that smell salty and fresh and seem to be active. Place the crabs into a large bowl as soon as you return home.
2.) Cover the bowl with damp paper towels or newspapers. Avoid filling the bowl with water unless you have an air pump. The crabs require oxygen to stay alive. Place the bowl inside the refrigerator fridge.
3.) Check on the crabs periodically to ensure they are still alive. If the crabs die they should be consumed as soon as possible.

How to store live lobster overnight

Lobsters are best cooked soon after purchase; however, they can keep overnight if you store them properly. If your lobster dies before you can cook it, do not eat it. When you need to store a live lobster overnight, select one that is lively. Pick up a few lobsters at the store and observe the tails, which should curl under when you handle them. Avoid purchasing a lobster that hangs limply in your hands; it may not survive overnight in your refrigerator.

Things You’ll Need

Towel
Plastic container
Seaweed

Instructions

1.) Place a slightly dampened towel in an open container, such as a plastic food container. The container must be large enough to comfortably hold the lobster.
2.) Place a layer of moist seaweed on the towel. Some stores that sell live lobsters will give you seaweed if you ask for it.
3.) Position the lobster in its new home inside the container. Add some more seaweed on top of it. Do not place a cover on the container; leave the top open. The lobster will suffocate if you place it in a closed container.
4.) Store the lobster in your refrigerator. The cold temperatures will force it to hibernate and it will stay alive. Cook the lobster within 24 hours.
